Given it is the second largest city in Hokkaido, Asahikawa offers a broad range of accommodation options.
The major hotels in Asahikawa are located close to the city center and offer a short walk to the main shopping district, bars and restaurants as well as to JR Asahikawa Train Station. Prices vary substantially between peak and off-peak seasons, so it is advisable to check availability and price well in advance.
With Hokkaido enjoying a smaller population density compared to Japan's southern islands, hotel rooms tend to be a little roomier than you may have previously experienced in Japan. Add to this that some Asahikawa hotels insist on using locally made furniture (having functionality as one of its main attributes) and you should be confident of getting a good night's rest from your sightseeing or snow activities.
For those needing to get a little closer to nature, the hot spring (onsen) regions should be high on the 'to do' list, with Asahikawa offering easy access to the main onsen areas of Sounkyo, Asahidake, Tenninkyo and Shirogane. There, you will find a healthy number of onsen hotels ready to entertain and relax you in spectacular surroundings.
Accommodation for the budget conscious is difficult to find in the city, but youth hostel, backpacker, and B & B accommodation is available a little out of the city (Biei and Furano).
