History of food samples in Japan

Niko Asahikawa Japanse food is renowned for its beautiful and elegant presentation. Japanese people place a high value on the presentation of food as a part of the overall dining experience. The visual aesthetics of the food are to be enjoyed as much as the taste. Food samples originated from the need to satisfy people's curiosity, wanting to see how their meal will be presented.

The origin of food samples is still a mystery, however, they are commonly accepted as first appearing in the early 1900's to show people how a school lunch should be made. Candle wax was the primary ingredient of food samples for a long time until the chaper, easier, and more flexible vinyl took control of the industry.

Most food samples look surprisingly real and they are infact prepared in a very similar way to the real thing. For expample, to make shrimp (prawn) tempura, a shrimp is made (of course, with the tail), it is then battered in a vinyl tempura batter, and then deep fried in oil to produce the final tempura result.

How to make food samples

Food samples can be made from non-commercial materials such as wax or vinyl. We use predominantly soft clay to make the shapes of the samples and then silicon materials ofr decorations.
