JAL to discontinue popular calendar due to economic slump

The annual International Ice Sculpture Competition, held in Asahikawa City, Japan is again under way, with 29 teams and 38 individuals showing off their talents in one of the most eye catching contests on the winter calendar.

Turning slabs of ice into something that will be photographed a few thousand times a day is no easy feat. Chainsaws, picks, shovels, chisels, irons, handsaws, drills, and polishers are employed over the course of 40 hours to produce works of ice art that have to be seen to be truly appreciated, both in terms of their size but particularly in their incredibly intricate detail.

3-D system at Tokyo museum takes audiences on ride through galaxy
50th Asahikawa Winter Festival & International Ice Sculpture Competition.
One of the most famous festivals in winter in Japan, the Asahikawa Winter Festival is certainly worth experiencing if you happen to be in Asahikawa at the start of February. Visitors will be able to see fireworks, laser shows, ice sculptures, and a massive snow stage featuring music and dance acts.
