Support for Japan's PM falls to new lows

TOKYO (Yomiuri) Two of the world's leading firms in the development and marketing of gasoline-electric motor hybrid vehicles--Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co.--have been battling it out in a price-cutting war to win consumers over to the fuel-efficient cars.

TOKYO (AP) -- Approval ratings for Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso's Cabinet hit a new low in a newspaper poll Tuesday, marking the worst level of support for the government in nearly a decade and raising concerns the unpopular leader may face a revolt from within his ruling party.

Expoland to close 21 months after fatal roller coaster accident

Toyota is set to slash the price of its Prius hybrid model to counter Honda's hybrid Insight, which has been enjoying brisk sales due to the low 1.89 million yen price tag of its base model. Honda also is planning to expand its range of hybrid vehicles.

The intensifying competition between the two leading manufacturers of hybrid cars is expected to boost the popularity of such cars against a background of rising interest in environmental conservation and tax breaks for highly fuel-efficient vehicles.
